What is a hallmark?
A hallmark is a set of component marks made of precious metals such as silver, palladium, gold and platinum, carried out independently by one of the four UK assay offices. The Hallmarking Act 1973 calls for precious metals such as silver, palladium, gold and platinum to be hallmarked to describe the metal content. Articles below a certain weight are exempt from hallmarking.
Victoria Grace Silversmith jewellery are hallmarked by the London Assay Office unless exempt by weight. Other items under the weight exemption may be hallmarked when it is appropriate and possible to do so. Piercing jewellery, for example, will not be hallmarked as it is very small and light. I use sterling silver, 14ct and 18ct gold in my work, alone with semi-precious and precious gemstones.
